Rishi (TOI Photo)I’m from Assam. Singer Zubeen Garg, who also hails from the same place, is a close pal and it is because of him that I got my first break in the year 2003. It was an Assamese film called Rong.
I was cast in the lead opposite actor Nishita Goswami, the daughter of National award winner Assamese actor Malaya Goswami.

The latter too starred in the film, directed by Munim Barua.
My first shot was a romantic scene where I had to drop my lady love to her house and bid her a hearty goodbye. The director wanted the scene to look utmost romantic, which required lot of body language on the actors’ part. But it was my first shot and I couldn’t help being stiff.
I was completely expressionless. I had met my co-actor Nishita for the first time on the sets and we were not even friends at that point of time. So, it was even difficult to emote.
Since we lacked chemistry, the scene looked like a brother saying goodbye to his sister. It took several retakes before the shot was okayed. In Kolkata, my first break was in a telefilm called Daman opposite Indrani Halder.
It was directed by Riingo. But I was not even a wee bit nervous during the shoot in spite of being pitted against Indrani, who was already a star. The only thing that was on my mind was to deliver a good performance. Till date, I go by the same principle.
