I'm open to Telugu film: Urmila
She may be missing from the big screen radar, but it’s impossible to deny the charm of Urmila Matondar. The Bollywood trendsetter was in town to support good friend and jewelry designer Poulomi who launched her latest collection here at a jewelry store.
“Hyderabad has changed so much,” says the actor. “And it has definitely changed for the better. I have come here after a long time.

The metamorphosis of the city into a cosmo landscape has completely taken me by surprise. It is a great success story.”
For someone known to be fiercely loyal to friends, it came as no surprise that the lady would come all the way from Mumbai. “It’s not that I support someone just because they are my friends. I do it because they are genuinely talented,” says Urmi who is famous for her loyalty to Manish Malhotra. Urmila has also walked the ramp for the designer many a times. Isn’t she restricting herself to just a few close friends? “Manish is definitely one of the best the fashion world has right now. It’s not that I’m restricting myself to him. I can’t help it if he is fabulous at what he does,” she defends. “But I’m game for walk the ramp for other designers as well. All they have to do is ask me. Style is a reflection of your personality, it doesn’t depend on what brand you wear or which designer you endorse,” she affirms.
Despite the years off the big screen, Urmila has managed to retain those enviable curves, she is so famous for. Ask her how she manages that, and she is quick to reply, “All thanks to you guys! Today the media has become very active. They are everywhere waiting to take a snapshot of you. An actor has to look his/her best for the camera.” With her hour-glass figure, hair in place and toothy smile, one would be forgiven to think that the actor is planning a comeback to the movies with a bang. But the lady refuses such suggestions. “There comes a point in everyone’s life when you need to sit back and take stock of what you have done. That’s happening to me,” she says, almost philosophically. “I can’t possibly sign all the movies that come my way. I’m not doing movies now and I don’t feel insecure about it. The more I keep myself away from it, the more I know of what I want to do next. I’m not saying this just for the heck of it. It will show when I sign my next film,” she says confidently. So how about doing a Telugu movie again? “Why not?” she asks. “I would definitely consider doing a Telugu film if something interesting comes my way. I received my first Nandi award here, so it will be great.”
In the past, the actor also dabbled in television with two shows — “Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa” and “Waar Parrivar”. Now that Bollywood is taking the television industry by storm, does she see herself making a comeback to the small screen? “Doing television was a fun break for me. The medium helps you make direct communication with your audience. And I totally loved it. Yes, there is big money and huge exposure on the small screen and I wouldn’t mind doing TV again,” she says. With the clock ticking, our final question lights up her eyes — her Diwali plans. “I love the festival ever since I was a child. The lights, the sweets, friends, family and festivities make it a wholesome fun experience. This year too I’m going to be with my family and enjoy the day,” she says before signing off.
