IC 814: Kumud Mishra says there should be no controversy over the hijacker’s code names
Actor Kumud Mishra has recently addressed the controversy surrounding the series IC814: The Kandahar Hijack, directed by Anubhav Sinha. This series dramatizes the harrowing events of the December 1999 hijacking of Indian Airlines flight IC 814, which sparked significant debate regarding its portrayal of the hijackers and the accuracy of its narrative.
The series faced backlash for allegedly altering the names of the hijackers to "Bhola" and "Shankar," leading to accusations of misrepresentation. Audience argued that the filmmakers have intentionally obscured the religious identities of the hijackers.
The Indian Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had also intervened and summoned Netflix's content head to discuss the portrayal of sensitive topics in the series, indicating the government's intent to ensure that media representations align with public sentiment and historical accuracy. In response to the uproar, the OTT platform updated the opening disclaimer of the series to clarify the real and code names of the hijackers.
In an interview with Hindustan Times, Kumud Mishra, who plays Ranjan Mishra, a Joint Secretary of RAW in the series, defended the use of code names asserting that they were indeed the names used during the hijacking incident. He clarified, “The code names used in the series were the actual names used during the incident. There should be no controversy about this”.
He also highlighted the difference between factual recounting and dramatization. He noted that the series is "based" on true events and emphasized that while documentaries and research materials exist for those seeking detailed information, the fictionalized account incorporates dramatic elements. Mishra explained that his portrayal is an interpretation of how the character might have reacted in such a situation.
Mishra further elaborated on the importance of dramatic elements in storytelling, acknowledging that while the core facts of the incident are preserved, creative interpretation plays a significant role. He mentioned that those interested in the event can refer to available materials, but adaptations often include dramatic elements for enhanced storytelling.
