Having lifted the Naqaab off her, Urvashi Sharma believes in taking things at a slow but steady pace. Too much on the platter is “confusing”. And that is why the actor takes up one project at a time. “Women are said to love shopping, but I hate it because I get lost when there are too many choices,” Urvashi confesses and adds, “I don’t know how Priyan Sir (Priyadarshan) manages to shoot for two of his projects together.”
While Chai Garam and Khatta Meetha are keeping the actor busy, her performance in Baabarr has been well-applauded.
“I recently got an award (Lion’s Gold Award) for my performance in the film. This is my first award,” says a visibly excited Urvashi.
When not facing the camera, what keeps this vivacious actor equally excited are live acts. “I’m doing a lot of balle balle on stage. Right since childhood, I’ve been interested in dance,” she says.
Considering that she has been a model, isn’t the ramp a lucrative proposition? “I’ve not done too much ramp because of my height. I am five 5’ 6 1/2”, which is short by ramp standards. But my sister, who is also a model, is 5’10”. While she is more of a ramp model, I’m a commercial face.” With both sisters in the same profession, aren’t there sibling rivalry? “Why should there be? There are times when we both go for an audition. Sometimes she bags the deal and at times, I do. What matters is one of us should get the assignment,” Urvashi jokes. While on fashion and the whole showstopper rigmarole, the actor adds that she doesn’t do it for money, “I believe in being the showstopper for one designer for a year and not switch brands, because I don’t want to ruin my image.” Elaborating on this “image”, Urvashi continues, “I don’t want a bad girl image. I come from a decent family. I’m happy with the pretty and girl-next-door tag rather than being called hot and sexy. It’s not that I can’t look hot, but that won’t be me.” She goes on to add how people have found her cute in her bikini sequence in Naqaab.
But doesn’t all this talk of a good girl image and bikini sound contradictory, one wonders. Urvashi reasons, “I am comfortable in a bikini. There’s nothing wrong in it as long as you can carry it off. You either look cheap or hot in a bikini. And I don’t look cheap. In fact, I don’t look hot either. Like I said, I look cute in a bikini.”
That’s fine. And is she certain that Bollywood won’t stereotype her if she is so gung-ho about her girl-next-door image? “Image can be created but not talent. Finally, it’s about talent. Simply put, it’s a combination of kismet and skill. If something’s not meant for you, it won’t happen,” Urvashi justifies.
And how does she look at the rumours of her dating gutka king’s son, Sachin Joshi? “I wouldn’t even want to comment on it,” she is loud and clear.
