'I hope to get behind the camera'

...says Vinay Pathak in a frank chat just before his film releases.
'I hope to get behind the camera'
He is man with a funny bone. He knows how to make audiences laugh and cry with him. After having given stellar performances in films like Bheja Fry, Oh, My God, Dasvidaniya, actor Vinay Pathak is ready with his next release Straight-Ek Tedhi Medhi Love Story. In conversation with the comic hero...
Whats Straight-Ek Tedhi Medhi Love Story about and whats your role in it?
My character Pinu Patel is having trouble getting married and being a 37 years old virgin makes him question his sexuality...
1x1 polls
whether hes straight' or not. This throws Pinu into a whirlpool of trauma and in order to discover the truth he goes through an array of events and mishaps before he discovers the reality.
There is news that you have lost a lot of weight for this film. Will we get to see Vinay with eight-pack abs in this film?
The eight-pack abs is a hoax so you should never believe in it, but yes, I had lost 20 odd kgs for the character because Parvati, the director of the film wanted me to be in a very specific body frame for the character.
What else are you working on these days?
Well after Straight there is SRK, Raat Gayi Baat Gayi, Mumbai Chakachak, Pappu Can't Dance Saala. I think audiences will really love my performances in all these films.

You have attended the State University of New York and have majorly been a theatre actor, then what attracted you to films?
I still do plays and work in different mediums (TV and Films) and attempting varied characters has always been an actors plight. And I am no exception. I guess this was a natural progression for me join films.
Although you have played different characters, audience identify you with comic roles only. Any comments?
I guess the reason is the stupendous acceptance and success of Bheja Fry. But I still would like to believe that audiences like to see me attempt different characters and they accept it readily as well. My characters in Johnny Gaddar, Manorama 6 Feet Under, Mithya and Via Darjeeling were appreciated by the people.
Is playing comedy roles a deliberate attempt or its just by chance that you get offers of comedy roles?
Its always the story and the character that needs to excite me to do a film. As I just said, many of my non-comic characters in various films have been widely accepted and appreciated. So labeling me as a deliberate comic artist is a little unfair, dont you think?
You also made a short film, Fourplay. Can we see expect some more films in days to come?
Yes, I sincerely hope so. If I get a chance I would definitely like to once again get behind the camera. I hope this would provide me with a chance of making really some good and meaningful cinema.
