He has two films lined up for release and at least three or four more in the pipeline. But that's hardly something new with senior Tollywood actor Jagapathi Babu. With an average of half a dozen films a year, he's never been afraid to experiment. "Somebody should come forward and break the rules," explains the man who's busy with a variety of projects.
His latest film set for release has him enacting a cop's role again. "But this is the one of the best cop characters I have done," he assures, adding, "The film focuses on the state of mind of an encounter cop before and after he kills a criminal. It is a tribute to the police." He doesn't, however, divulge if the film is a remake of the Hindi film Ab Tak Chhappan. "I have seen that Hindi film and I liked it very much," is all he says. In contrast, the actor is also playing as a family man in another film Bangaru Babu.
Ask him how he manages to stay fit and he says, "I am naturally a fit person and don't need to do any special exercises." He also says he doesn't worry too much about his looks "I am an actor and always a director's person and I don't worry about the other things."
He is the one actor who's always agreed to doing multistarrers and special appearances. "I love cinema and always look for creativity. Doing the same stereotypical films is boring. When producers approach me for special roles, I try not to disappoint them," he says.
Jagapathi Babu has completed 20 years in the industry and acted in close to 80 films. And he has had to prove detractors wrong along the way, who said his appearance or voice wasn't suited for films. The actor celebrating his birthday today is a satisfied man in his forties. He feels that Anthapuram is still the best role of his career. "When Krishna Vamsi offered me the special role in Anthapuram a decade ago, many reacted negatively. But it turned out to be the best role in my career."
Finally, quiz him on the secret of doing a handful of films every year when other leading actors struggle with one, and he says, "If a good story comes to me, I take it up. I am even ready to reduce my remuneration if the film is going over budget. I can sit idle for a year and I can also work continuously for a year without a break."
This year will also see him acting in a political satire. At the time when actors are plunging into politics, ask him if he has similar plans and he laughs, "No, I don't want to joint politics and I don't have any knowledge about it. I liked the story of a CM's secretary wanting to become the CM, thats all," he laughs.
Besides this, he is doing a small appearance in Dil Raju's Akasamantha and is also doing a sequel to Gayam. But in spite of all the films he acts in, he lets us know he will never turn producer. "I don't have good business sense and that's why I don't want to become a producer," Jagapathi Babu signs off.
