JUST ACTING FOR NOW: UpendraIt will be a while before he returns to directing, says Upendra. But when he does, it will be in his unique, different style.
This may disappoint Uppi fans waiting to see their fave star calling the shots behind the camera. But it will be at least a couple of months before Upendra returns to directing. Of late, the Kannada film industry has been abuzz with reports of Upendra taking up direction after a gap of seven years, causing a lot of excitement among his fans.

When BT contacted the actor, he explained that plans to direct are on hold for the moment. “I’m still penning the script of the film and will take it up only in January. But like all my previous films — Om, A, Sssh — this too will be unique,” promises Uppi.
He is now busy with Buddhivanta, which is produced by Shanker Gowda, Mohan and Rajendra Singh Babu. The film will see Uppi share screen space with six heroines — a first after Upendra, in which he wooed three heroines. The untitled film stars Pooja Gandhi, Suman Ranganathan, Brinda, Netanya and Saloni.
Uppi also has other projects, including Lava Kusha, Bhimoo’s Bang Bang Kids and Balcony. “But I’m really looking forward to Anatharu — it’s going to be a truly different film,” he says.
The film, a remake of Pithamagan, also stars Darshan. But how confident is he of the film doing well, especially since soft love stories seem to be the popular trend right now? “I don’t believe in trends or following them.
I only believe in breaking them — I’ve always wanted to do different things, so there’s no question of doing something just because it’s popular,” he reasons.

And why is he doing only multi-starrers? “It’s not a rule that I’ve laid down that I’m only going to be signing multi-starrers. I take up a film when the story sounds good. And sometimes the combination is also an added bonus. Like in Lava Kusha, I star along with Shivrajkumar, who’s a dear friend. And our chemistry was brilliant. Now that’s a plus for the film,” says Uppi.
Meanwhile, the actor has also found time to chill. He’s been watching late-night flicks at various multiplexes across the city.
