Her big break came recently as Maya the secretary, in American comedian and director Albert Brooks much talked about Looking For Comedy In The Muslim World. But Sheetal Sheth is not happy. She claims she was horrified when she first arrived in Hollywood. Every agent she met, insisted she needed a boob job.
Weird, did you just say?
With movies like American Chai, ABCD, Wings of Hope and A Pocket full of Dreams to her credit, Hollywood actress of Indian origin Sheetal Sheth is a hot favourite among the niche NRI directors.
But clearly, Hollywood has turned out to be a different ball game all together.
The stunning actor has admitted thinking people would have problems with her name, not her breasts.
"I went to Los Angeles and they told me to get boobs. About five different times they have suggested I get breast implants.
I just laughed because my body is in proportion. I'm not buxom by any means but I'm a small girl so how much bustier can I be? Thank God I have a healthy self-image," she has been quoted as saying.
This quintessential South Asian woman is not typical. A degree from Tisch School of the Arts at NYU apart, Sheths resume is impressive. Award winning movies are not the only things she can boast of. Shes been called star material, a find, luminous. Shes been the president of a Hindu Youth Association and has been actively involved with charity and social causes.
Sheetals been recently covered in many magazines like High Life and Hollywood Life. Im pretty idealistic, and I have pretty high expectations. Im an old-school soul. What they did back in the day to me, is very appealing - like writing a beautiful letters. I love letters - long letters...
... I dont want an e-mail. I want to see your handwriting, and, I want to see the passion thats put into what you say and write." This is what she "wants" according to the article in High Life.
She can also be seen in Hollywood Splash, the latest book by famed photographer Veronique Vial. The book includes pages of celebrity photos having fun.
Going back to her recent release, heres an excerpt from the Rolling Stone review of Looking For Comedy In The Muslim World.
It's a "what if" comedy, as in what if George W. sent Brooks to India and Pakistan to do his stand-up act for the 300 million Muslims who live in the region? The goal being to learn what tickles the funny bone of a people the world has stereotyped as terrorists.
Fred Dalton Thompson, the actor and former U.S. senator, spearheads the diplomatic mission, telling Brooks, "The president has a great sense of humor." The line gets the film's first belly laugh. For writing a 500-page report, Brooks will earn the Medal of Freedom. His wife (Amy Ryan) gives her blessing, and Brooks is off to New Delhi with two agents (John Carroll Lynch, Jon Tenney) and a Hindu assistant (Sheetal Sheth). "
According to comingsoon.net, Of course, it doesn't hurt that most of his (Brook) scenes pair him with the delightful Sheetal Sheth as his assistant Maya, who is not only the perfect comic sidekick, but also gets in few kind-hearted jabs at Brooks' expense herself.
Her next release will be a movie titled Indian Cowboy. A romantic comedy, the film follows the life of Sapna, a girl who has come to the US to study architecture in Seattle. Hope we don't have to wait to hear about the Hollywood biggie once the job is done.
