How Bollywood displayed its love for the Indian cities

Delhi: The city of heart and heritage

Bollywood has drawn some of its most vivid backdrops from Delhi. From the youthful ebullience of ‘Band Baaja Baaraat’ and ‘Vicky Donor’ to the political tirades of ‘Rang De Basanti’ and ‘Rajneeti’, the capital is a unique collage of contemporary pandemonium compounded by an ancient past. From lovers walking at India Gate, to students in North Campus, the authenticity and vitality that Delhi brings us in each frame.

2/8

Mumbai: The city of dreams

If Bollywood has a beating heart, it’s Mumbai. The city isn’t only a backdrop but the place where dreams are born. Movies such as 'Satya' and 'Company' projected its underworld, and 'Wake Up Sid' and 'Dhobi Ghat' its emotional side. Throughout the decades, Mumbai, from the iconic Marine Drive romance in Bombay to the rush of suburban trains in ‘Gully Boy’, has been a reflection of ambition, struggle, hope.

3/8

Kolkata: The city of culture and nostalgia

Kolkata has been a muse to filmmakers, poetically speaking, for all time. Movies such as 'Kahaani' depicted its Durga Puja celebrations and narrow lanes, and 'Parineeta' celebrated its colonial allure. The soul of the city — Howrah Bridge, the tramcar and the intellectual scent — comes across in a Kolkata that breathes literature, culture and slow-paced romance on celluloid.

4/8

Punjab: The land of fields and festivities

Punjabi life has energized Bollywood through joy, colour, and music. Whether it is rolling mustard fields in 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge' or the weddings in 'Jab We Met' and 'Dil Bole Hadippa', Punjab is nothing if not about warmth, food, and celebration. You have bhangra beats and dhol rhythms shunning or ridiculing us for merely being able to do the celebration to the sound of morning' club' music for always in Bollywood. Its no exaggeration to say, Punjab represents vibrancy and life.

5/8

Rajasthan: The royal canvas of grandeur

Bollywood has no state that can compare to Rajasthan in providing grand backdrops and scenes. Rajasthan provides the most beautiful backdrops, from the palaces in 'Jodhaa Akbar' to the deserts in 'Lamhe' and 'Paheli'. Rajasthan is the most authentic place to offer extravagance for storytelling. In addition, contemporary films like 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam' and 'Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela' embodied Rajasthani colors, folk music, and themes of heritage to create images that are as unforgettable as the screen plays. For royalty, tradition, and follies, Rajasthan is Bollywood's traditional canvas.

6/8

Kashmir – Heaven on earth

For decades, Kashmir has been a long-established romantic narrative in Bollywood. The valleys of Kashmir have become the eternal setting for love stories like in 'Kashmir Ki Kali', 'Jab Jab Phool Khile', and 'Kabhi Kabhi'. 'Haider' and 'Fitoor' have used Kashmir not just for the views, but to interpret painful political and emotional confrontation.

7/8

Goa – Beaches & freedom

Goa, particularly Panjim, continues to be idolized as the party capital and a place of freedom. The film 'Dil Chahta Hai' immortalized Chapora Fort as a pilgrimage site in a certain way for friendship, while Go Goa Gone, and more recently, Finding Fanny, extolled the quirky, languid vibe that Goans love. Goa is Bollywood's preferred landing place for stories about friendships and self-discovery.

8/8

Chennai – Tradition meets modernity

Chennai brings with it a mix of beaches, temples, and cultural depth. Bollywood films like 'Chennai Express' turned Marina Beach and its colorful streets into global icons. The city often represents tradition blending with modern hustle, making it a strong visual backdrop.
