‘Homebound’ for Oscars: Neeraj Ghaywan’s film defeated 'Pushpa 2', 'The Bengal Files', 'Kesari Chapter 2', and others in the race

'Homebound' is India’s official entry for the Oscars 2026. Starring Ishaan Khatter, Janhvi Kapoor, and Vishal Jethwa, the film is directed by Neeraj Ghaywan and has already created a buzz with its heartfelt and gripping story. The story is set to release in theatres on September 26, 2025.

What is 'Homebound' about?

'Homebound' tells the story of two childhood friends from a small North Indian village. They dream of joining the police force, a job that promises dignity and respect long denied to them. But as they get closer to achieving this goal, growing desperation threatens their friendship and the bond that has always held them together.

Official selection faced competition from major films

The journey to become India’s Oscars entry was not easy. 'Homebound' competed with several films across different languages. According to a post shared by Outlook on Instagram, the other films in the race included 'Pushpa 2', 'The Bengal Files', 'Superboys of Malegaon', 'Kannappa', 'Meta The Dazzling Girl', 'Sambar Bonda', 'Kesari Chapter 2', 'I Want to Talk', 'Tanvi The Great', 'Kubera', 'Boong', 'Vanvaas', 'Paani', 'Gandhi Tatha Chettu', 'Aata Thambaycha Naay', 'Sekhar Kammula’s Kubera', 'Sankranthiki Vasthunnam', 'Humans in the Loop', 'Jugnuma', 'Phule', 'Veera Chandrahasa', and 'Pyre'.

'Homebound' cast expresses pride and excitement

The actors shared their joy following the announcement. Ishaan Khatter wrote on Instagram, "This is the film I've been proudest of, and even if it wasn't my film, I would feel the same way. Some films are much bigger than us.. @neeraj.ghaywan i love you so much brother, you deserve this and more. You've made the most humane film in some of the most isolated of times and it's my honour to be a vessel for your vision."

He added, "Only you could make such an Indian film at its heart with a universal language. @karanjohar for enabling us, deeply understanding and protecting this film like a father." Ishaan also acknowledged filmmaker Martin Scorsese, the film’s executive producer, writing, "the greatest @martinscorsese_ whose midas touch brought us home."

Vishal Jethwa also shared his excitement on social media, while Janhvi Kapoor posted, "Every part of this film has been nothing short of a dream. The journey, the people, what this story means, and how personal it’s been for everyone in our team…"
