Hindi slang ‘chirkut’ inspires Bandook 's characters
Bhola (Aditya Om) and Lochan (Arshad Khan) are called Chirkut Cowboys in debutant director and actor Aditya Om’s film Bandook. This term is inspired by the slang, chirkut.
Explaining the significance of using the term Chirkut Cowboys in the film, Om says, “Chirkut is a Hindi slang that has a variety of meanings – imbecile, stupid, miser, impetuous, idiot or non-classy.

The word is usually used a lot by north Indians. Both, Bhola and Lochan, are like that and since the plot of my film is based in UP, the thought to use it for the two of main characters came very naturally to me. The slang reflects their persona; they ruthlessly hunt their enemies and at the same time have a perverted sense of humour that comes as comic relief to the tragic proceedings.”
Aditya has uploaded the unused footage of Chirkoot Cowboys online, and it immediately got an impressive number of views. He says, “The uploaded footage has sparked off curiosity among people. This was the best way to create awareness about the film. People know about it even before the official trailer is out. Anurag Kashyap had done something similar for Gangs Of Wasseypur by introducing characters – Perpendicular and Tangent.”
Bandook releases December 7.
