His real identity

Johnny Lever was born John Prakash Rao Janumala from Prakasam district, Andhra Pradesh, India. He made his career and life in Mumbai, which determined his persona and career, even though he is South Indian. Lever adopted his stage surname “Lever” from his father’s employer, Hindustan Unilever Ltd, where his father worked.

2/5

Growing up in Dharavi

He had a struggling childhood. He was born and raised in Asia's one of largest slums, Dharavi. Amid his early life with poverty and hardship, the young boy grew up dancing and imitating people, and making others laugh to get away from those day-to-day struggles. These early impressions of the normal run of life later became the cornerstones for timeless comic timing and iconic characters.

3/5

Father’s hard work at HUL

His father, Prakash Rao Janumala, was an operator at Hindustan Unilever Ltd. in Mumbai. Johnny himself did odd jobs in the streets, like selling pens and doing mimicry, to support the family. This bond he had with the company was so close that his coworkers even referred to him as “Johnny Lever”—the name that eventually stuck with him and became a Bollywood sensation.

4/5

Battle with alcohol addiction

At the peak of his career, Johnny Lever openly admitted to struggling with alcohol addiction. He has described that phase as a personal “hell” where he felt he was losing himself. His decision to overcome the habit came from faith and determination, and he often credits his spiritual transformation for helping him get back on track.

5/5

Royal Albert Hall triumph

Lever became an international sensation and a well-recognized Bollywood comedian behind the stand-up act. He also performed at the Royal Albert Hall, London, in 2006, a rare honour for Indian comedians. Thanks to this, the actor won hearts and minds with audiences and critics alike and became a world celebrity not only on the silver screen.
