Here’s why Master Mayur, the young Amitabh Bachchan of yesteryears stepped down at the peak of his career
Do you remember the child actor who stole hearts with his portrayal of a young Amitabh Bachchan in iconic films like ‘Muqaddar Ka Sikandar’ and ‘Laawaris’? He became a famous face in the glitzy era of the 70s-80s Bollywood and he is none other than Master Mayur, originally Mayur Raj Verma. Later, he became a household name as Abhimanyu in BR Chopra's Mahabharata. Despite being the highest-paid child artist of his time, Master Mayur took a surprising turn, stepping away from the limelight to pursue a different path.
Hailing from Delhi with no prior connections to the film industry, fate intervened in Master Mayur's life. His mother, a distinguished writer and journalist, played a pivotal role in his journey, conducting interviews with film stars. During one interview with director Prakash Mehra, the need for a child actor resembling Amitabh Bachchan arose. Seizing the opportunity, Master Mayur's mother suggested her son for the role, and after a glance at a photograph, Prakash Mehra extended the offer for Muqaddar Ka Sikandar.
Master Mayur's debut success got him well-deserved stardom, and he was titled 'Young Amitabh.' His fame reached new heights with hits like ‘Laawaris,’ making him the highest-paid child artist of his era. Thereafter, movies like ‘Love in Goa,’ ‘Sharabi,’ and ‘Kanoon Apna Apna’ happened, adding more stars to the actor’s profile.
Then he caught the attention of BR Chopra who was impressed by his talent. Chopra cast him as Abhimanyu in ‘Mahabharata’, sparking speculations of a promising acting career. However, he surprised everyone by abruptly disappearing, leaving fans curious about his sudden exit and plans.
At the peak of his acting career, Mayur Raj Verma pivoted towards business. Married to renowned chef Noori, with whom he shares two children, he relocated to Wales and laid the foundation for a prosperous business empire. Together with his wife, Master Mayur manages a thriving restaurant in Indiana, which has significantly contributed to his wealth, now reaching billions. Besides the restaurant, he is actively involved in various other successful business ventures.
