Here's how Jaya Bachchan REACTED to Amitabh Bachchan's shocking accident on the set of 'Coolie'
In 1982, Amitabh Bachchan was involved in a serious accident while filming his movie ‘Coolie.’ This shocking incident occurred during a fight scene at the Bangalore University campus, where Amitabh was supposed to jump onto a table. His wife Jaya Bachchan's reaction to the accident made headlines later.
During the shoot, Bachchan miscalculated his jump and landed incorrectly, causing the edge of the table to hit his stomach, resulting in severe internal bleeding. He was rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment.
Amitabh underwent several surgeries in Bangalore before being transferred to Bombay for further procedures. Jaya Bachchan learned about his condition from her brother-in-law and hurried to the hospital.
During an interview with Simi Grewal, she recounted the moment she arrived. When she reached the hospital, her brother-in-law asked where she had been because everyone was looking for her. She told him that she had gone home to check on the kids, but he urged her to be brave and then broke the news about Amitabh's condition. “I was like, no, it’s not possible; he’s not going to do this. I know it’s not possible. I had the prayer book in my hand, the Hanuman Chalisa. Dr. Dastoor passed by and said, ‘It’s only your prayers that’ll help.’ But I couldn’t read it,” Jaya revealed.
Jaya then witnessed the doctors trying to revive Amitabh, feeling hopeless until she noticed his toe move. 'He moved, he moved,' she exclaimed, filled with hope. From that moment, Jaya focused on believing that he would recover.
The recovery process was incredibly tough for Amitabh. He struggled to walk and felt like he had lost a significant part of himself. He described the experience as losing 75% of his physical abilities and worked hard to regain his strength. At the time, their children, Shweta and Abhishek, were too young to grasp the seriousness of the situation. Jaya recalled a time when Abhishek had a severe asthma attack at school due to a classmate telling him their father was going to die.
On August 2, 1982, he finally regained his health, and this date is now celebrated as his second birthday. Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan got married on June 3, 1973.
