Helen: Saroj Khan revolutionised the song-and-dance culture in Bollywood
Saroj Khan is one choreographer who worked across generations in Bollywood. Be it making Kangana Ranaut dance in 2019 release Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi to being associated with Madhuri Dixit Nene as her go-to choreographer or working with someone like the yesteryears actress Helen, popularly known for her cabaret routines in movies. As she passes away, Bombay Times connects with Helen, who has many memories associated with Saroj Khan.
“Sarojji and I learnt Kathak from the same masterji. She was just 8 years old back then, but extremely talented. She is instrumental in giving Srideviji and Madhuriji an extra push. She contributed a lot to their stardom. In fact, she is a legend. With her talent she revolutionised the song and dance culture in Bollywood. Not only was she good with her classical moves, but also bringing in sensuous twists in the routines. She was purely a gifted talent,” says Helen.
The yesteryear actress also says that Saroj Khan paved way for women in Bollywood. “I remember at the time there were only make choreographers. She was the only female choreographer of the time. She has given a lot to the film industry, and I am sure she’s been an inspiration to many women at the time.”
Remembering the last time she worked her, Helen adds, “Sarojji choreographed a song in Khamoshi: The Musical. I was doing a film after a long time. I was out of touch with dancing. During the rehearsals I used to tell her, ‘Sarojji I can’t do your steps’. She would laugh and say by making such a statement I was embarrassing her.”
