According to reports, the film derives its title from a pseudonym - 'Gul Makai', the name of a heroine from a Pashtun folk tale, Malala used at age 11 when she first came into attention through her diary.

The filmmaker recently made headlines when he received a fatwa from a Noida-based Muslim cleric for disrespecting the Quran. The director later revealed that he had been getting many death threats since he started work on the film.

"Ab fatwa lag gaya hai (now a fatwa has been issued) by a person from Noida. There is a poster that has Malala holding a book and standing next to a blast, and he thinks it is the Quran. He thinks we haven't shown respect to the holy book. He called me a kafir," Khan told IANS in a statement.

The film features

Reem Shaikh

, Atul Kulkarni and Divya Dutta in lead roles.
