Gauri Karnik has seen many a Hindi film in which actors play many a musical instrument. What she has observed is that, more often than not, film stars have no clue as to how to hold a musical instrument.
So, when Gauri, who has done her fair share of TV serials with Little Mirchi Thoda Pepper, Humare Tumhare and Milan, was signed on to play Tina Marie in Sur, she spent three months taking violin lessons.
‘‘It is the ‘chalta-hai’ attitude which sees many not put in that extra effort,’’ says Gauri, ‘‘And it’s not as if actors don’t realise that the way they play a particular musical instrument in a movie is wrong.

It all boils down to: Who will notice anyway?’’
Learning how to play the violin is, of course, easier said than done. ‘‘Mastering any musical instrument is tough,’’ offers Gauri, ‘‘Training has helped me play the violin the way it should be played.’’
Now that she has hit the film scene, it’s bye-bye to TV for Gauri. ‘‘If nothing else, mixing the two mediums would not be right,’’ she reasons, ‘‘It’s funny, but the offer to act in Sur came at a time when the TV roles I was playing were not that great. For one, I wasn’t playing the protagonist, unlike certain actresses in Kkusum and Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. I was thinking on the lines that, maybe, I should start playing such roles. Fortunately, this didn’t happen —otherwise I would have been caught in an image trap,’’ she points out. Sur, in Gauri’s words, “depicts the havoc created by a man’s ego when he senses that his protege’s music is better than his own.’’
Being presented exclusively by Indiatimes, the Tanuja Chandra-directed Sur has Lucky Ali starring opposite Gauri. Maybe, she’ll get lucky in Bollywood with Sur!
