In the 1990s, Govinda was celebrated for his comic flair and dance moves, but few know that choreographer Ganesh Acharya played a key role behind many of his hit songs. In a recent interview, Ganesh shared the story of how he landed his first major break with Govinda and director David Dhawan, leading to the iconic track Husn Hai Suhana from Coolie No 1.

Speaking with Friday Talkies, Ganesh recounted his early days and how his sister suggested his dance style would be a great match for Govinda's on-screen persona. Determined to work with the superstar, Ganesh spent six months waiting outside Govinda’s apartment building before he finally secured a meeting. His persistence paid off when Govinda gave him a chance to choreograph a song for the film Prem Shakti. Despite only having two days to shoot, Ganesh completed the choreography in record time, impressing Govinda.

This led to a significant opportunity when Govinda and Dhawan chose him to choreograph Tum Toh Dhokhebaaz Ho for Saajan Chale Sasural. The success of this song prompted Govinda and Dhawan to ensure Ganesh choreographed the major hit Husn Hai Suhana for Coolie No 1. Despite top choreographers Saroj Khan and Chinni Prakash being initially favored, Govinda and Dhawan orchestrated a schedule to ensure Ganesh got the chance.

"Saroj Khan and Chinni Prakash were the top choreographers then and Ramesh Taurani wanted them to do the song. Govinda and David wanted me to do the film. Then the film was about to be released, and both of them found out when Saroj and Chinni Prakash would be busy. They found four dates to shoot where these two would be unavailable. Ramesh ji asked who would shoot the song since Saroj and Chinni were busy, they then brought up my name and said, ‘Ganesh is free, he will do it,'” Ganesh said.

Ganesh Acharya worked tirelessly on the song, which became one of the biggest hits of the year. He went on to collaborate with Govinda on over 150 films in the years that followed. The song Husn Hai Suhana remains one of Govinda’s most beloved dance numbers from the 1990s.
