From Chhaava to Sky Force: The most popular Bollywood films of the first quarter of 2025

The first quarter of 2025 has been an exciting time for Bollywood, featuring a mix of historical epics, political thrillers, and patriotic action films. Here are some of the most talked-about releases between January and March 2025.

2/6

‘Chhaava’

Released on February 14, Chhaava is a historical epic that has taken the box office by storm. Directed by Laxman Utekar, the film features Vicky Kaushal as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, alongside Rashmika Mandanna. The story delves into Sambhaji's courageous fight against the Mughal armies, blending action, drama, and history into a gripping tale. With breathtaking visuals and music by A.R. Rahman, Chhaava has grossed approximately Rs 590 crore, making it the highest-grossing film of the year so far. Critics have praised Kaushal’s performance and the film’s grand production design, cementing its status as a blockbuster.

3/6

‘Emergency’

Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency, released on January 17, is a political drama that explores India’s tumultuous Emergency years (1975–1977). Not only does Ranaut play the lead role as Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, but she also directs the film. Starring Anupam Kher and Shreyas Talpade in key roles, the film has collected nearly Rs 20 crore at the box office despite receiving mixed reviews. While its portrayal of historical events has sparked controversy, Emergency has been lauded for its gritty narrative and strong performances. The film is currently streaming on Netflix.

4/6

‘Azaad’

Also released on January 17, Azaad is a historical drama set in pre-Independence India. Directed by Abhishek Kapoor, the film stars Ajay Devgn as Vikram Rathore, a fierce rebel leader who trains Govind (played by debutant Aaman Devgan), a villager who learns to fight against British rule. Rasha Thadani also makes her debut as a royal family member involved in a romance with Govind. Despite its ambitious storyline and stunning visuals, Azaad underperformed at the box office, collecting around Rs 9–10 crore. The film is currently available on Netflix.

5/6

‘Sky Force’

Released on January 24, Sky Force is an aerial action drama based on India’s first airstrike during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965. Starring Akshay Kumar and debutant Veer Pahariya, the film balances high-intensity battle sequences with themes of patriotism and sacrifice. Directed by Abhishek Anil Kapur and Sandeep Kewlani, Sky Force grossed between Rs 144–168 crore at the box office and resonated well with audiences looking for patriotic cinema.

6/6

‘Mere Husband Ki Biwi’

For those seeking lighter entertainment, Mere Husband Ki Biwi, released in February, delivered a fun-filled romantic comedy centered on marital misunderstandings. With witty dialogues and charming performances, the film managed to earn Rs 8 crore at the box office
