After his short filmAhalya
went viral on the internet, film maker Sujoy Ghosh is suddenly the center of everyone’s attention. He has been flooded with phone calls about his next project and whether it would be a full length feature film like Kahaani
or whether it will be another experiment in filmmaking.READ: Ahalya: Bollywood celebs laud Sujoy Ghosh's short film Ghosh who hails from the city, though now settled in Mumbai, confesses that Kolkata and things Bengali have always owned a large part of his psyche and that is why
Kahaani was set in Kolkata and
Ahalya was a Bengali film.
Again, not many know that Korbo Lorbo Jeetbo Re, the slogan of the Kolkata Knight Riders, was also coined by Ghosh.
For some time Ghosh has been silent about his next project after
Kahaani, though curiosity was mounting and then
Ahalya was released on You Tube. But it is his quest to find his Bengali moorings that has once again brought Ghosh to Kolkata; this time to buy the film rights of
Tungabhadrar Teere – the landmark historical novel by Saradindu Bandyppadhyay.
"
Tungabhadra fascinates me. It’s setting is so panoramic, the thoughts and feelings involved are so deep and the characters so larger than life that it simply transports me to another world. It would be an immense task to bring this immortal story to life. I have bought the film rights of the novel and hope to film it in Hindi," Ghosh said. He was here over the weekend, when he also attended the 60th anniversary celebration of Pather Panchali among other things and left for Mumbai on Monday evening.

The Times of India Entertainment Tungabhadra..is a story about the invincible Vijayanagara empire in the 14th century. With Kalinga lying prostrate at its feet, King Devaraya has claimed the hands of the two princesses – Bidyutmala and Manikankana. This was to strengthen a bond of strategic convenience between the two empires. The twist in the tale comes when a tempest brews and the princesses are rescued by a gallant kshatriya warrior – Arjun Barma. It changes the course of the destiny of all the characters involved and what follows is a tale of politics, love and morals.
"The novel has complex intrigues and it will definitely not be an easy film to make. It will take time and an extremely detailed approach because a film of this intensity is not made in haste. For years I have loved to imagine myself as Arjun Barma, quite a wild thought that, but all the same…and that is perhaps why I dreamt of making this film. There is no concrete reason really...just like there is no reason behind falling in love…" Ghosh summed up.
He has bought the film rights of the book from Prabir Chakraborty who holds the rights of all of Saradindu’s literary works. He has been regularly selling film rights of different Byomkesh novels of the writer to different filmmakers in both Bengali and Hindi. But this is the first time that any filmmaker has bought the rights of Tungabhadrar Teere. "I am happy that Sujoy has bought the rights of this best loved historical fiction of Saradindu. We can only hope that this film surpasses his past extremely successful ventures," Chakraborty said.
Though
Ghosh did not wish to speak about it right now, Hrithik Roshan might be approached to play Arjun Barma in the film.
