Filmmaker Farah Khan reveals YouTube income surpasses her film earnings; Says, ‘Massive’ money made in a year'

In 2024, filmmaker Farah Khan stepped into the world of YouTube and quickly became a hit with her engaging vlogs. Her fun content not only won her a huge following but also turned her cook, Dilip, into an online celebrity. During a recent YouTube conversation with Soha Ali Khan, Farah dropped hints about the impressive income she now makes from the platform.

Motivation behind the YouTube venture

After wrapping up the script for her next movie, Farah realized there would be a significant wait, at least a year, before filming could start. With her team persistently suggesting she try her hand at YouTube, she eventually embraced the idea. Another major factor behind her move into vlogging was the rising cost of higher education, as her children are soon set to begin university, motivating her to use the platform as a way to boost their college fund.

Choosing food content and early success

Farah shared that she chose to do something related to food, which led her to pick Dilip and write punchlines for him to say in her videos. She mentioned that by her second vlog, she had already earned her Silver Play Button. When asked about her earnings from YouTube, Farah candidly said it's “massive,” adding, “In my entire career, maybe in a year, I have not made so much money, even though I have directed so many films and all.”

Creative freedom on YouTube

The filmmaker expressed how YouTube has given her the creative freedom she always wanted, explaining, “It’s my channel, so no OTT platform or production house is telling me ‘yeh toh kaatna hi padega’, nor is any TV channel saying you can only bring this guest on, which I used to hate. The demarcation that this one is an A-lister and the other one is tacky, I used to hate it.”

Engaging celebrity vlogs and Dilip’s rise to fame

Farah’s vlogs take viewers inside the homes of various celebrities, where she cooks unique dishes with them right in their kitchens. Alongside these culinary adventures, she offers tours of their homes and shares lighthearted conversations revolving around food. The playful exchanges between her and her cook Dilip have become the most beloved part of the series, catapulting Dilip to social media stardom. Farah openly admitted in one vlog that since starting their YouTube journey, she has even increased Dilip’s salary.
