bangalore: a big budget kannada film, h2o, with the cauvery dispute as its backdrop, has raised the hackles of kannada protagonists who have even called for its ban, saying it hurt the sentiments of kannada people and half the dialogue in the movie was in tamil.
"the anti-kannada film h2o must be protested by kannada speaking people. government on its own should ban it," kannada chaluvali (movement) leader vatal nagaraj told reporters here today, joining the chorus of protesters. he claimed that the film was "against the interests of kannadigas" and kannada speaking people had been projected poorly in tamil dialogues in the movie. nagaraj said that despite assurances following protests against the film from different kannada bodies, the producer had not removed the "objectionable scenes which offended the sentiments of kannadigas". protests would be stepped up if the "scenes against kannadigas" were not removed. the film, in which kannada star upendra and tamil actor prabhudeva are cast, has already evoked protests from some kannada votaries who had staged a demonstration in front of the theatres running the movie on the day of its release. upendra, an actor-cum-director known for giving unusual titles to his films like a and shhh, has himself written the story, dialogues and lyrics. he has his own large fan following and some big hits to his credit. the two main characters in the film hail from two imaginary places in karnataka and tamil nadu and the movie offers its own solution to the festering cauvery row. the heroine is born to a kannadiga-tamil couple who are killed during the cauvery riots.
