At 18,
Mrighdeep Singh Lamba was looking at a career in automobile engineering. With a family owned business and an engineering career charted out, how did film-making happen? “I love telling stories. So one night at the dining table, I told my father I wanted to be a film-maker. The very next day he took me to a film school and got me enrolled!” shares Lamba with a twinkle in his eyes.
Unlike other kids struck by filmdom, Lamba emphasizes on how he wanted to learn the art of direction and only then plunge into filmmaking. “Education is important. I wanted to educate myself, learn the technicalities of film making and only then proceed.”
From then on, the journey was quite clear. Mrighdeep assisted
Farhan Akhtar and
Subhash Ghai on sets of Yuvraaj, Don and many more films until he made his directorial debut with Teen Thay Bhai. “TTB was my debut film. One of the reasons it didn’t work was because of lack of promotion. For those who didn’t like it, they would have had their reasons, which I completely respect.”
On his latest film
Fukrey, Lamba says “When I started ideating the storyline for this one, it was a fresh start for me.
Every film is a different experience; there is no proper formula of making a perfect film. You cannot assume that what didn’t work in the past won’t work in future too, and vice versa.”
Lamba mentions every film is a reflection of the maker’s personal experiences. “Hard work, keen observation, awareness and patience can go a long way.”
As an aspiring engineer turned filmmaker, it sounds strange when Lamba calls himself a
fukra. “A
fukra is basically someone who does nothing, is good for nothing, but someone who dreams a lot. The dreams may or may not be big, but they are still important. There is a little
fukra in all of us. It’s instinctive. We all like to take a break and do nothing sometimes.”
Talking about his future projects, the young director says that he hasn’t planned anything. “At this point of life my ideas are very vague and too early to talk about them right now,” he says.
However, he does talk about his one big dream project. “I want to make a lavish musical some day. I’ve thought about it loads of times, but I’m very scared to touch the project right now. I want to wait for the right time.”
