Social media activity has once again set the rumour mill buzzing, with Farhan Akhtar reportedly unfollowing Ranveer Singh on Instagram. The move has caught attention amid ongoing chatter around Ranveer’s alleged exit from ‘Don 3’, a project Farhan was set to direct.
Fans were quick to notice that Farhan Akhtar no longer follows Ranveer Singh on Instagram, even as the actor continues to follow the filmmaker. This subtle digital shift has added fuel to speculation, especially at a time when reports suggest Ranveer may have distanced himself from ‘Don 3’ following the blockbuster success of ‘Dhurandhar’.
Reports of ‘Don 3’ being put on hold
In December last year, reports surfaced suggesting that Ranveer had stepped away from ‘Don 3’ after ‘Dhurandhar’ went on to dominate the box office, as earlier reported by NDTV. Around the same time, it was also said that Farhan Akhtar had paused work on the film and redirected his focus towards ‘Jee Le Zaraa’.
The latest unfollow incident has reignited conversations online, with many wondering if things are no longer smooth between the actor and the filmmaker.
Ranveer Singh’s casting as don
Ranveer Singh was officially announced as the new face of the iconic 'Don' in 2023. Excel Entertainment unveiled his first look while describing the casting as the start of a "new era" for the franchise.
He was set to step into the shoes of Shah Rukh Khan, who played the stylish anti-hero in Farhan Akhtar’s ‘Don’ (2006) and its sequel ‘Don 2’ (2011). Both films also featured Priyanka Chopra Jonas in a pivotal role.
Legacy of 'Don' franchise
The ‘Don’ franchise traces its roots back to the 1978 Amitabh Bachchan-starrer of the same name. Excel Entertainment had acquired the rights to the cult classic, which was penned by legendary writers Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar, giving the story a modern makeover for a new generation.
Despite the growing speculation, the makers have neither confirmed Ranveer Singh’s exit from ‘Don 3’ nor announced any replacement for the role so far.
What’s next for Ranveer Singh and Farhan Akhtar?
Meanwhile, ‘Dhurandhar’, also featuring Akshaye Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal, and Rakesh Bedi, has emerged as the highest-grossing Hindi film of the year, minting over Rs 1000 crore worldwide. Ranveer Singh is set to return in ‘Dhurandhar 2’, slated for release on March 19, 2026. Farhan Akhtar, on the other hand, was most recently seen in the war drama ‘120 Bahadur’.
