After the failure of Mujhse Dosti Karoge, Rani reportedly stopped accepting movie offers. She recalled how her mother thought she was acting irrationally, as she kept turning down opportunities. During that time, Rani became withdrawn at home and began making her own decisions.



After facing criticism from film critics and magazines, Mukerji had started to believe her career was over, but she didn’t give up. Instead, she decided to pursue roles she truly believed in. When Saathiya came along, Rani initially refused the offer, but Yash Chopra persuaded her by locking her parents in his office until she agreed to take the role. She is grateful for his persistence.
