Did you know the iconic villain of Bollywood Ranjeet left the Indian Air Force to pursue a career in films?

Ranjeet Bedi, born as Gopal Singh Bedi, is a veteran Indian actor who has left an indelible mark in the Hindi film industry with his many iconic roles as a villain. Before entering the film industry, Ranjeet studied in the science stream and graduated from Hindu College in Delhi. He was a sports enthusiast and represented his college team as the football team's goalkeeper, earning him the nickname "Goli" (misspelled version of Goalie).

Ranjeet was an ambitious young man who initially aspired to join the Indian Air Force (IAF). He had successfully passed the entrance exam and began training in Coimbatore. However, in a past conversation with Film Companion, Ranjeet recounted how his mentor believed he was "maaroing line (making a pass)" on his daughter, which triggered a conflict that ultimately led Ranjeet to leave the Indian Air Force and return to his carefree life.
Upon returning home, Ranjeet found himself at crossroads. His introduction to Bollywood came through a friend's father, Ranvir Singh, who had connections with the royal family of Kota and experience in the British film industry. Singh offered Ranjeet his first role in a film titled Zindagi Ki Raahein, which was eventually shelved. To pursue this new path, Ranjeet lied to his family and moved to Mumbai, as working in films was considered taboo at the time.

His first significant role came in 1970 with Saawan Bhadon, where he played Rekha's brother. This was followed by notable performances in films such as Sharmeelee, Reshma Aur Shera, and later Border and Bulandi. Over the years, Ranjeet has appeared in more than 200 films, establishing himself as one of the busiest actors during the 1970s and 1980s. In the same conversation, he reminisced about that era, stating, "I had 80 films on the floor at one point," highlighting his prolific output during those years.
Ranjeet's transition from supporting roles to becoming a leading villain was marked by his portrayal of negative characters that resonated with audiences. He became widely recognised for his roles that often depicted him in a negative light.

Throughout his career, Ranjeet has worked alongside some of Bollywood's biggest stars, including Amitabh Bachchan and Rajesh Khanna. His ability to adapt and remain relevant is evident as he continues to act on his own terms. Although he has only appeared in two Hindi films over the last decade — Welcome Back (2015) and Housefull 4 (2019) — he is set to return in Housefull 5, scheduled for release in 2025.

In recent years, Ranjeet has also become active on social media, where he shares glimpses of his life and engages with fans. His posts often reflect nostalgia for his past while celebrating his current lifestyle.
