Deepika Padukone recalls her ‘challenging experience’ during her Hollywood film audition
Actress Deepika Padukone, who has carved a niche for herself as a superstar in the film industry, just added another achievement to her long list of accomplishments. ‘Deadline’, an international journal, has recognized Deepika as a disruptor for the class of movers & shakers 2024, joining the prestigious ranks of Eva Longoria, Uma Thurman, and Lee Sung Jin. In her candid conversation with the publication, Deepika discussed her experiences in the entertainment business, the stigma associated with mental illness, and her efforts to introduce Indian film to the Hollywood global stage.
Deepika started her Hollywood journey in 2017 with ‘xXx: Return Of Xander Cage’. Thinking back on her career in the film industry, including the experience of auditioning for Hollywood roles, she candidly revealed, “About a decade ago, when I started my journey in the West auditioning, it was a really new process for me because I’d never had to audition. I wasn’t a trained actor, and I never went to a fancy acting school — everything that I’ve learned has been on the job.”
The actress acknowledged that Hollywood auditions are difficult, pointing out, “The systems are so different between Hollywood and Bollywood.” She drew attention to the popularity of Indian cinema around the world, citing the triumph of ‘RRR’, which created Oscar history in 2023 with its Best Original Song for ‘Naatu Naatu’. She shared, “I think the world has become smaller, and the world has come together and it’s really about telling great stories. Whether it’s working in Sweden or Bosnia, it’s about telling interesting stories that resonate for an audience across the world.”
She highlighted the changing way that the world views Indian cinema, pointing out that although the country's storytelling and work culture have not changed, the world's recognition of Eastern stories—especially those from India—has. She went on to say that realizing there is a "world" outside of America is what has changed significantly.
On the work front, Deepika is working on a number of interesting projects right now. First up, she co-stars with Telugu superstar Prabhas in ‘Kalki 2829 AD’, which is scheduled for release in May. She will also be seen with her husband Ranveer Singh in ‘Singham Again’, the third installment of Rohit Shetty's ‘Singham’ series. She will also be the lead in a Bollywood remake of the 2015 film ‘The Intern’, starring Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway. Notably, she will use her Ka Productions banner to produce this project as well.
