MUMBAI: Doordarshan Urdu kept up the state broadcaster's tribute to Farooque Shaikh by telecasting Katha at 2pm Sunday. The channel is expected to repeat the film at 10pm as it usually does.
Sai Paranjpye's adaptation of the hare-tortoise fable broke the stereotype by casting Shaikh as the swift, smooth-talking Bashu Bhatt who uses every trick in the book to serve his ends.
The naïve, gullible part went to Naseeruddin Shah, another departure from the norm. The joke goes that Shaikh's character was named Bashu Bhatt as a slant dig at filmmaker Basu Bhattacharya.
Sai Paranjpye who now lives in Pune was unable to attend a directors' tribute organised for Farooque Shaikh Thursday owing to ill health.
