This year, Hollywood franchises proved that a film sequel could be a success – both financially and critically. With established characters and an accepted format, there is no second guessing for makers about whether moviegoers will turn up at cinemas. Film experts say that there is less risk in making a sequel when compared to original films and as a result more instalments in film franchises are on the way.
WHAT’S THE CHALLENGE WHILE MAKING SEQUELS?From bringing new directors on board to changing leads in new instalments (like Don 2 and Don 3), filmmakers alter not just the visual feel but, at times, even the mood. Writer Akshat Ghildial says, “What’s crucial while writing a sequel is to maintain the overall sensibility of the film. For instance, both Badhaai Ho and Badhaai Do – which are from the same franchise but with different storylines – were about family.”

‘SEQUELS WORK BECAUSE OF FAMILIARITY’Producer and business analyst Girish Johar says, “Audiences return for sequels because of familiarity with that universe. If the film is entertaining and attuned to the expectations of their audience, then the sequel works.”
