Remakes of South Indian and even Hollywood films are common in Bollywood now. But in what could be a first and path-breaking move, Hindi cinema will see an insurgence of Chinese remakes. Woodpecker Movies, a subsidiary of the US-based PE Film Fund, has bought the rights of seven Chinese movies to be remade in Hindi.
Rajesh Bhatia, MD, Woodpecker Movies, explained, “Like India, Chinese culture is also embedded with strong family ties that reflect in their films.
And, with martial arts predominantly prevailing in the Far East, their narratives offer the perfect blend of family values and action, sure-shot ingredients for Bollywood. We have hand-picked seven such Chinese blockbusters and bought their rights.”
The first among the series of Chinese films to be remade in Hindi will be a romcom, NG See Yuen’s He Yue Qing Ren (Contract Lover), that has the popular Chinese lead pair Richie Jen and Fan Bing Bing in the lead.
The new trend, the production house hopes, will uplift the business prospects of Hindi films even further.
