NEW DELHI:
Delhi Police has prepared a chargesheet against Peepli Live co-director Mahmood Farooqui for allegedly raping an American research scholar at his Sukhdev Vihar house on March 28. The 30-page chargesheet will be placed before a magistrate later this week.
Police examined 15 eyewitnesses who reportedly saw the woman reach Farooqui's house on the day of the incident.
Farooqui's students, whom the woman claimed to have met on the way, were also asked to record their statements. Her claims have also been verified with medical reports.
The PhD student said that she was introduced to Farooqui in Gorakhpur by a friend when she had gone to research Baba Gorakhnath. He had offered to help her get material for research. The chargesheet also mentions the statement of the common friend.
On the day of the incident, the woman said that she had called Farooqui asking for tickets for his dastangoi performance and he asked her to come to his house. Later, he called her again and asked her to join him for a wedding. But when she reached his place, she found him drunk. The calls records of the woman and Farooqui were also recovered to verify the claims.
Police said that the chargesheet was prepared within a month after the complaint as they had to wait for the woman to arrive from the US. Copies of the email sent by the victim and Farooqui's replies apologizing to her after the assault were also attached to the chargesheet as evidence.
After the incident, the woman had contacted the US Embassy, which asked Delhi Police to take action. The cops then got in touch with the researcher to file a complaint.
