The organisers of the Athens International Film Festival have invited Dasgupta to grace the festival and accept the Golden Athena award.
This, incidentally, is the first time that any Indian director will be given such an award. Previously, this prize for excellence in cinema had been awarded to the likes of Kim Ki Duk, Daniel Day Lewis and Costas Gavras. In a letter dated August 14, festival director Orestis Andreadakis expressed the desire to organise a retrospective of seven of Dasgupta’s films — Uttara, Bagh Bahadur, Charachar, Mando Meyer Upakhyan, Swapner Din, Kaalpurush and Ami, Yasin aar Amar Madhubala.
The festival, which will be held in Athens between September 20 and 30, is the only one in the world whose Grand Prize is awarded by a youth jury comprising film students, aged 18-25. The jury members are selected from all over the European Union. The Golden Athena award is accompanied by a cash prize of 10.000 Euros (approximately $13.000). Needless to say, Dasgupta is delighted with this information. “It’s an extremely prestigious award and a matter of pride for any Indian. I’ll be leaving for Athens on September 19, after attending the Toronto International Film Festival and the National Awards felicitation ceremony in Delhi,” he signed off.
