Notable filmmaker Buddhadeb Dasgupta died today, at the age of 77, after suffering through prolonged kidney ailment. Remembering the National award-winning director, Deepti Naval, who worked with him in his debut Hindi movie Andhi Gali (1984), shared fond memories with Bombay Times.

She said, “I worked with dada only in one film. I remember shooting for it in Versova along with Kulbhushan Kharbanda. Since that project we shared such a warm relation with each other. I was happy to work with this talented and a sensitive soul. He was to me like a brother or a friend and every time I visited Kolkata, I made sure I met him. We bonded well on our poetries. He had sent me his book of poems. Also, at the unveiling of my poetry book in Kolkata he had come as a guest.”

Over the years, Deepti did manage to stay in touch with him. She shares, “It were subjects such as cinema and poetry that kept our conversations long. I knew of his kidney ailment too, but I didn’t know it was at this critical stage.”

The actress who was recently seen in a web show and earlier in films like NH10, Tevar and international film Lion says that Dasgupta’s work should be preserved for future generations to see. She signs off saying, “I will pray for his soul. As an artiste I feel that we should cherish his work. His work should be preserved and that’s all I would want. The only way we can pay homage to any sensitive artiste who spent his life on his art is by preserving his work where students can easily access it and learn from his work.”
