MUMBAI: Bollywood's broke and hurting, but helpful advice is pouring in. Shah Rukh Khan says he likes the Yash Chopra business model. "In 2004, they made three films in record time (Veer-Zaara, Hum Tum and Dhoom) which were box-office hits. We must get real with the economics of film. You can't afford to be self-indulgent—otherwise it's better that you make home videos.
Ultimately you are making movies for the audience. They have to watch what you make. Only then can you prevent the B2B (Born to Bomb) syndrome." And all's not lost yet. The A-list of producers and directors has wised up to revenue options such as satellite rights, which have gone up. The satellite rights of Page 3 were sold to Sony at an estimated Rs 2.25 crore. Mirani adds, "Most smart producers sell their movies at Rs 1.5 to Rs 2.5 crore per territory. There are five major territories, so that's a cool Rs 7.5 to Rs 12 crore on table. Add to it the satellite, music and overseas rights. If a producer has a star like Shah Rukh or Hrithik, a reasonable budget, and finishes his film on time, he's on a roll."
