Bollywood films where the lead characters meet with a sad ending

Bollywood films are incomplete without tragedy and melodrama. There are a lot of films in which the main characters die at the end and those films have proved to be blockbuster in cinema halls. Though there are a lot of happily-ever-after movies in Bollywood, sometimes the makers decide to throw a twist at the audience. Such films with tragic endings leave us teary-eyed but they also create a greater impact on the audience. The audience cannot easily forget these films. Here’s a list of Bollywood films where the main characters meet with a sad ending.

Bajirao Mastani

This magnum opus by Sanjay Leela Bhansali left the audience teary-eyed with the tragic end where the characters like Bajirao (Ranveer Singh) and Mastani (Deepika Padukone) meet their end. The film is about Maratha Peshwa Bajirao I and his second wife Mastani. After Bajirao leaves for the battle, his mother Radhabai and Nana Saheb imprison Mastani and her son Shamsher Bahadur. Bajirao dies due to his sickness and trauma of his hallucinations; at the same time, Mastani dies in captivity.

Ishaqzaade

This movie is considered to be a rendition of Romeo and Juliet. The movie talks about the fearless love story of Zoya (Parineeti Chopra) and Parma (Arjun Kapoor) from two political families whose rivalry and mutual hatred for one another goes back generations. The movie addressed the issue of honour killing in India. The movie ends with Parma and Zoya's bodies lying on the terrace, and an on-screen message that explains how thousands of lovers like them are killed every year only because of falling in love outside their caste and/or religion.

Goliyon Ki Rasleela..Ram Leela

Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone starrer ‘Goliyon Ki Rasleela..Ram Leela’ is considered as another Bollywood version of Romeo and Juliet but in a Gujarati backdrop. Two clans- Rajadi and Sanera- have been at odds with each other for the past 500 years. During the festival of Holi, Ram, who is a Rajadi boldly enters the house of the Sanera heads and flirts with Leela whose mother, Dhankor Baa is the chieftain of the Saneras. Ram and Leela fall in love and plan to elope. Ram and Leela decide that they are each other's soulmate and shoot one another dead. At the end both the clans come together to cremate the bodies of the lovers.

Dil Se

‘Dil Se’ is a romantic thriller based on the insurgency in Northeast India. It is a classic and was way ahead of its time. It touched the hearts of millions of people around the globe and still makes people fall in love with its raw presentation of human emotions. The movie stars Shah Rukh Khan and Manisha Koirala. Both the characters die at the end. Meghna’s clothes are concealed with a bomb. As the timer goes off, they both die.

Barfi!

Comedy-drama ‘Barfi!’ stars Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Ileana D’cruz. The film depicts the story of a story of Murphy (Barfi) and his relationships with two women. This movie has a tragic ending. Several years later, 'Barfi' (Ranbir Kapoor) is shown to be gravely ill in a hospital and is close to death. Jhilmil (Priyanka Chopra) arrives and lies with 'Barfi' in his hospital bed as Shruti (Ileana D’Cruz) narrates that the two died peacefully together, not wanting to leave each other behind in life or death. The film closes showing the happy days of Barfi and Jhilmil as the credits roll.
