Roy's daughter Rinki Roy Bhattacharya said this was the first time the award was being presented to an actor who was no more. "We have selected Farooque Shaikh for this distinction because he was a distinguished artiste who truly deserves it. As soon as somebody suggested his name, our jury made a unanimous decision to recognise Shaikh's phenomenal body of work. Would you believe it, he never received an award despite all those wonderful movies from Garm Hava, Gaman, Noorie, Chashme Buddoor, Katha, Umrao Jaan and Bazaar. His performance in the parting scene in Bazaar just takes your breath away. Just one national award for supporting actor for Lahore (2010) but that is all," she says.

Shaikh Sahab's daughter Shaaista will receive the honour on his behalf from Farida Jalal.

Other awards will be presented to Jackie Shroff, Ananth Mahadevan, Paresh Rawal and Amit Rai. Veteran artistes Sulochanaji, Kamini Kaushal and Farida Jalal will also attend the function. A musical performance of Asha Parekh's film songs will follow. Popular radio jockey RJ Siddharth will host the show.

Shockingly, Bimal Roy, who is unarguably one of India's finest directors, never even received a Padma Award. His family, like his fans, thinks it is a shame.

Yet, the Bimal Roy Memorial foundation instituted in his name 22 years ago takes care to reward unsung heroes of the film industry. For instance, an award was presented to leading make-up artiste Pandhari Juker, commonly called Pandhari Dada, some years ago.
