mumbai: singing divas lata mangeshkar, asha bhosale and union minister jaywanti mehta on saturday came under flak from maharashtra deputy chief minister chhagan bhujbal for opposing the proposed flyover project at pedder road in posh south-mumbai locality, where the three reside. replying to a two-day debate on the motion, thanking governor dr p c alexander for his joint address to the state legislature on march 13, bhujbal lamented that when he urged the celebrities to have a look at the flyover design drawn out by a german architecture, "they simply refused".

"they refused to look at the designs on the plea that they would never in the first place approve of any flyover to be constructed in the area, however, beautiful the design," he added. bhujbal said that he had personally instructed the rto officials to hold a meeting of residents of the area to explain the need for such a flyover and show them the designs of the proposed project. however, a row cropped up even before the meeting was held. the trio then approached him and opposed the project. all persuasive arguments to convince them of just having a look at the designs proved futile, he added. construction of the flyover, the last link of the entire flyover projects undertaken during the rule of the previous shiv sena-bjp government would come to a nought due non-cooperation of the residents of pedder road area, he said. bhujbal also pointed out that the residents would have to face severe pollution following traffic jams due to lack of a flyover and appealed the opposition to join the government in convincing the residents of its need.
