kolkata: with 52 globally acclaimed films from 25 countries, india's largest film society, cine central, on sunday unveiled a week-long international forum of new cinema as part of the seventh kolkata film festival. formally inaugurating the forum with the chinese movie the road home by zhang yimou, ace film maker mrinal sen said in times of international strife and direction, good films epitomising creativity, come as a welcome change.
legendary actor and chairman of the festival soumitra chatterjee said the thirst for good films has resulted in entries that symbolise the best in contemporary world cinema in the forum. movies from australia, belgium, brazil, canada, china, colombia, croatia, cuba, czech republic, finland, france, germany, greece, hungary, iran, israel, italy, netherlands, new zealand, norway, poland, spain, sweden, switzerland and yugoslavia would be screened at two show houses of the metropolis during the next six days. the high point of the forum would be a six-film package from sweden comprising richard hobert's where the rainbow ends and the birthday, the twisty first film by stand-up comedians felix herngren and fredrik lindstorm adult behaviour...it's all in the mind, anders gronros' fairytale the glass-blower's children and lisa ohlin's feature debut waiting for the tenor. cine central launched the calcutta international film festival in 1986 and hosted it independently till 1997, the year after which it was merged with the calcutta film festival to be renamed as international forum for new cinema. of the three chinese entries, two are yimou's works - the road home and not one else which competed at berlin 2000 and venice 1999 respectively marking the director's return to form after a middle age slowdown. chinese war movie lover's grief over the yellow river, second in a nationalistic trilogy directed by feng xiaoning and controversial iranian production daughters of the sun depicting the bitter fate of rural women would also be on show. cine enthusiasts would have a visual feast in love without frontier, a major award winner in the festival circuit by veteran iranian woman director pouran derakhshandeh and widely acclaimed israeli film injil directed by m bregman, who would be in the city for the screening. in the polish package would be happy man, a feature debut by malgorzata szumowska, egoists by mariusz trenlinski, expected here for the screening, and the cart man by mariusz malec. finnish and new zealand entries would feature in the forum after quite a few years. israeli directors jonathan paz and colombian director jua fischer would join the festival with their latest films.
