“It used to be called the Paris of the East at a time,” he says, adding, “Its geo-positioning is amazing. Beirut has a bay and a wonderful weather. You can water-ski in warm ocean, drive down for an hour and can ski on snow. It is so much like Los Angeles. But there is a lot of stress around in the city. Since the country is so heavily divided religiously, by the French and the British, the place is still a mess.

Half the buildings are blown up, the statue outside our hotel had bullet holes in it and parts of the city haven’t been rebuilt. The place is quite stressed out, but one look at it and you know, it could’ve been a marvellous place to visit,” says Saif.
