We all are fans of his music. We feel like the industry has lost its golden charm. My dad always credits Bappi Da for giving him his career because he has composed my dad’s most iconic songs, be it 'Laal Dupatte Wali' or 'Tutak Tutak'. So my dad has such fond memories with him, and we will all miss him. But his music will live forever.
His daughter is in a bad state, feeling miserable. Everyone in the family is grief-stricken
Bappi was ambitious and there was a time in the early 80s when he had overtaken everybody, Rajesh Roshan, Pancham da. He was doing maximum films. He was a tabla player. At the age of four, he would do shows in Kolkata as a child prodigy. I had organised a party for one of my films, I asked him to perform classical tabla and people were shocked that they never knew he could play the tabla.
I remember once a man refused to accept that I am Bappi Lahiri because I was wearing a coat to protect myself from cold and he couldn't see my gold chain.
During the shoot, Mithun seemed upset. One day I asked him what the matter was. He said, I am working so hard but I don’t see my career headed anywhere. That day I said to him, I will make a movie that will turn around your fortune. And that film was ‘Disco Dancer’.
We were, frankly, a little shocked to see Bappi owns so little gold. You look at him and you think he owns kilos of gold jewellery, but that’s not true. His wife, a homemaker, has more gold.
Bappi Da was a highly respected music director. Even though he was two years younger than me, it is his work and his art that makes him so great. I extend my condolences on the behalf of the Mukesh family.
