BAFTA winner ‘Boong’ set for India release, here's when and where to watch the acclaimed Manipuri film

After scripting history as the first Indian film to win the BAFTA Award in the Children’s and Family Film category, ‘Boong’ is finally heading to Indian theatres. The Manipuri drama, directed by Lakshmipriya Devi and backed by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani, now, viewers in India will get a chance to experience the much-talked-about story on the big screen.

When and where to watch ‘Boong’

The film is scheduled for a limited theatrical release in India on Saturday, September 19. It will open in select cinemas across major cities rather than a wide nationwide rollout. Since its premiere in 2024, it has mostly travelled through international festivals and special screenings. Its BAFTA victory has further increased curiosity among Indian audiences eager to watch it.

A festival favourite with global recognition

'Boong' first premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and later screened at several prominent events, including Warsaw International Film Festival, MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, the International Film Festival of India and the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, where it was named Spotlight Film. The film stood out for its emotional storytelling rooted in regional culture.

Story and cast

Set in Manipur during a period of unrest, the film follows a young boy named Boong, played by Gugun Kipgen. He dreams of reuniting his separated parents, believing it would bring happiness back to his mother, Mandakini, portrayed by Bala Hijam. With his loyal friend Raju, played by Angom Sanamatum, he embarks on a risky journey to the border town of Moreh and even crosses into Myanmar in search of his father.

What the director and Farhan Akhtar said

Farhan Akhtar revealed that his long association with Lakshmipriya Devi influenced his decision to support the film. He told ANI, “Lakshmipriya Devi and I have known each other for about 20 years. This film is set in a region of India from which we rarely get to watch films. It was nice to support that as well, and it’s a very heartwarming story. So, it just felt right."

Reflecting on her inspiration, Devi shared a deeply personal note: “ 'Boong' is the book I could not write because of my bad English! The film is inspired by my grandmother's folktales that cushioned me with a certain kind of fuzzy warmth, during my childhood. It is dedicated to the resilience of the people of Manipur. I am experiencing this crazy mix of complete disbelief, happiness and a whole lot of gratitude that a Manipuri film is finally reaching a wider audience, in mainland India! Come and say hello to 'Boong'!"
