After the overwhelming response to the trailer of ‘

Badhaai Do

’, filmmaker Harshavardhan Kulkarni can’t wait for the audience to witness the magic of Bhumi Pednekar and Rajkummar Rao on the big screen. Releasing on February 11, the film offers a fun filled ride while highlighting the concept of lavender marriage aka ‘marriage of convenience'.

When asked what made him opt for a theatrical release instead of taking the digital route, Kulkarni shared, “When you are releasing something as cool as ‘Badhaai Do’, there is a trust that it’s going to be something great. I would always go for theatrical rather than direct OTT, primarily because I still feel community viewing is very important. The film must be remembered for a long time. We have asked people if they would like to watch this film in theatres or OTT, and there has been an overwhelming response in support of the big screen, it’s one of the reasons why we are backing a theatrical release. Personally, I will trade everything for a theatrical (release).”

Interestingly, the ‘Badhaai Do’ trailer has also earned praise from filmmaker Onir whose filmscript based on a gay Army man was recently rejected by the Defence Ministry. Reacting to difficulties often faced by directors in similar situations, Harshavardhan asserted about his film, “We have a great censor board and our film has been through all, it has been loved and liked so much.”

“But there is a prejudice. What can we do? If the film is based on a certain plot, concept or idea, I definitely feel it’s premature to judge it so soon. I don’t think anything should be stopped in that way, but that’s my personal opinion. We are all there to stop watching, if we don’t like it, that’s a choice. I can switch off the TV or walk out of the theatre. Even after watching a trailer, you can be like, ‘I don’t want to go.’ No one is forcing you. Why can’t there be freedom to just make? I don’t want to sound controversial,” he signed out.
