NEW DELHI: Tinu Verma could have avoided a lot confusion had he just added the word ‘and’ to the title of his latest film Baaz The Bird In Danger. After all, Verma’s title indicates that baaz is the bird in danger. That’s pretty paradoxical. ‘‘While baaz is the psychopathic killer in the film, the bird in danger refers to the three heroines in the fray,’’ explains Verma.
Over the years, Bollywood seems to have made it its speciality to add taglines to otherwise self-explanatory titles of films.
Dhund — The Fog and Bawal — The Panga offer cases in point. But in this case, The Bird In Danger is part of the title and not the tagline of the film. More specifically, the film is about the baaz and the birds he puts in danger. Of course, adding an ‘and’ would have made things that much easier.
‘‘This movie is a thriller and is set in the small town of Nainital. It tells the tale of a man who makes prey of all the things he loves. It’s a whodunnit which will have the audience guessing about who the killer is and which of the three heroines manages to survive,’’ elaborates Verma, who last made Maa Tujhe Salaam and is one of the top stunt directors in the film industry.
Playing the part of a policeman in the film is Sunil Shetty. And the action man is maha excited about his role. ‘‘The way Baaz The Bird In Danger has been set up is what makes it interesting,’’ offers Shetty, ‘‘Then, it has the small-town element, meaning that everyone knows everyone else —but amidst all these known faces is a killer. Everything combines to make for interesting drama.’’
While the film co-stars Jackie Shroff, Dino Morea, Preeti Jhangiani and Aditi Govitrikar, the centre of attraction in Baaz The Bird In Danger is Karisma Kapoor. For the simple reason that the Sisters Kapoor are slogging it out at the box-office, what with Kareena’s Khushi also vying for top honours. And what makes matters riveting is that both Lolo and Bebo are in search of a big hit.
Now, even as one tries to figure out who will hit the bull’s-eye, there’s no overlooking the World Cup factor. Will cricketing action prove to be the Baaz and the two sisters, the birds in danger? Only time — and the box-office — will tell.
