B-Town raises a toast to 'Margarita With A Straw'

Kalki Koechlin- starrer 'Margarita With A Straw' attempts to break the stereotypes that accompany disabilities through its bold characters. Already, the film has managed to impress people from the industry. Amitabh Bachchan took to a microblogging site and posted, “A screening of Margarita with a Straw... sensitive, well performed and brave original film… Shonali Bose (sic.)”
Aamir Khan, who attended the special screening of the movie with wife filmmaker Kiran Rao echoed Big B’s sentiments, saying, “It’s a must watch. Kalki is outstanding and she is really amazing in the film and so are all the other actors.” She added, “It’s a coming-of-age movie and it’s such an emotional journey.It makes people’s disability and differentness so normal and everyone is dealing with so many different things and that makes it even more poignant and touching. That is just one aspect of her; Laila is such an interesting character.”

Commending the actors for their “brilliant job,” Shraddha Kapoor says, “Nobody should miss this film. It’s very beautifully told and I definitely want to try and see it again.” Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap appreciated the film’s sensitivity in particular. He says, “You are dealing with a subject like this and you have a character with cerebral palsy and another who is visually impaired. But this film is not about disability or disease, it’s about finding life and finding love for one’s own self and it’s such a beautiful film with some terrific performances.” Filmmaker Karan Johar wrote, “Hearing amazing things about #MargaritaWithAStraw… Cant wait to see it.”
At times heartbreaking, at times hysterically funny, the film breaks stereotypes of disabled women and brings forth a bold character which hasn’t been seen in Indian cinema — and yet at the same time is utterly relatable. Margarita With A Straw, produced by Viacom18 Motion Pictures, Jakhotia Group, Kool Homes and Ishan Talkies, releases April 17.
