An Assam police team has arrived in Pune to serve a summons to comedian Samay Raina in connection with a case filed over his YouTube reality show India’s Got Latent, according to PTI.
The case, registered in Guwahati on Monday, alleges that the show promoted obscenity, sparking widespread outrage following controversial remarks by YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia aka ‘Beer Biceps’.
Ranveer Allahbadia’s comments about parents and sex on the show led to multiple complaints, resulting in legal action against him, Raina, and other participants, including Ashish Chanchlani, Jaspreet Singh, and Apoorva Makhija. Assam police have already summoned Ranveer Allahbadia and Ashish Chanchlani, while summons for the remaining three, including Raina, are pending.
According to officials, Assam police’s cyber division has been stationed in Mumbai, where they have already served notices to Allahbadia and Chanchlani. They are now in Pune to issue a summons to Samay Raina, who has a residence in Balewadi. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Cyber, the state’s cyber and information security division, is also investigating the matter alongside Mumbai police.
Samay Raina has been asked to appear before Mumbai police on February 17, but he is currently in the US for his shows and has sought more time. The Maharashtra Cyber division had also called him for questioning on February 18. Allahbadia, who was summoned by Maharashtra Cyber, failed to appear, and officials plan to summon him again.
So far, Maharashtra Cyber has summoned at least 50 individuals for statements, including those involved in the show. On Thursday, actor and television personality Raghu Ram, who was a judge on India’s Got Latent, recorded his statement with the agency.
