Arzoo Govitrikar, Karisma Kapoor - Celebs who accused their partners of domestic violence

Bollywood celebs spread cheer every time they appear on the silver screen, but for a few, this happiness lasts only in front of the cameras. Some celebs have had tumultuous personal relationships that wreaked havoc on their lives. Recently, Arzoo Govitrikar accused her husband of domestic violence, and years ago Rati Agnihotri had ended her 30-year-long marriage due to the same reason.

Bollywood rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh recently hit headlines when his wife Shalini Talwar filed the case under the 'Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act' in Delhi's Tis Hazari Court. The musician has been given time till August 28 to file his response. In her application, Talwar had alleged that she has been subjected to numerous incidents of physical, verbal, and mental abuse at the hands of her husband. Shalini has also reportedly alleged that Honey Singh was in a relationship with a Punjabi actress and when she found out, the singer promised to break up and stay loyal to his wife. Talwar has also mentioned that Honey Singh would earn Rs 4 crore a month from songs, performances and royalties and it is around that time he got addicted to alcohol, drugs, and anabolic drugs.

‘Baghban’ actress Arzoo Govitrikar had filed a domestic violence case against husband Siddharth Sabharwal in February 2019, and now, in 2021, she has filed for a divorce. Narrating her ordeal, the actress told ETimes, “He has pulled me by my neck and tried to throw me out of the flat. He has slapped me. He has kicked me in my stomach. There were days when I was beaten up black and blue and I couldn't come out because I didn't want my bruises to be seen. I suffered blackouts and my hands and legs used to swell up. I stopped getting sleep and if I managed to sleep then I would suddenly wake up at 2 am”.

When Karisma Kapoor was embroiled in a divorce case and custody of her kids with estranged husband Sunjay Kapoor, she had also filed for a domestic violence case. She had reportedly stated that her husband had caused her immense mental agony by “living with another woman and her child” in the couple’s Delhi house. Explaining the same, her lawyer Sanjog Parab had told BT, “This is a unilateral case that comes under Section 19 in The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005. It would be wrong to take the term 'domestic violence' in its literal sense. In this case, the kids are the primary concern. She wants to protect her children, so she has taken this step”.

Rati Agnihotri ended her 30-year-long marriage with architect Anil Virwani in 2015, owing to domestic violence. The ‘Coolie’ actress revealed that the reason she put up with all the pain for 30 years was her son Tanuj but eventually she decided to put an end to it. Sharing one incident, Rati told BT that when her son Tanuj was away for a film shoot in Pune, her husband's rage left her fearing for her life. "I thought to myself that I am a 54-year-old woman and I will progressively grow older and weaker and then one day I will die, beaten to death," she had told back in 2015.
