Apara Mehta’s on-screen bahu is perhaps the most popular character on Indian television today. But the actress, who plays Tulsi’s saas, Savita, on Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, is more excited about her real-life daughter’s acting career.
Apara was in the city recently along with her 21-year-old daughter, Khushali Jariwala. The mother-daughter pair were performing in a play called Aaye dur se milne huzur se.
Apara says theatre has been and will remain her first love. “I started my career as a theatre artist and can never give up acting in plays. Even today, I am busy doing both Hindi and Gujarati plays, besides serials,” she says. “There are some more offers to act in serials. Let’s see what comes of them. Till then, I am happy with what I have been doing so far.”
But Khushali isn’t quite so content. She has very clear ideas about what she wants to do. “My mother is my inspiration,” she tells us. “It is because of her that I developed an interest in acting. But right now, my focus is on playwriting rather than acting. I have written the script for a Gujarati play called Marriage Ma.”
So does she plan to follow in her mother’s footsteps someday? “I have been getting offers, but I have refused them,” she reveals. “Being on stage in front of a large audience gives you a different kind of high. The response and the connection are instant. While acting on screen, you never get to know the audience’s immediate reaction.”

But the two talented women have more than acting on their minds – especially while in Delhi. “I just love coming here,” Apara gushes. “The city is so different from Mumbai. What attracts me to this place is the food – I just freak out on chaat papri and chole kulche.”
Khushali is impressed too. “Delhi is known for its culture and people,” she says. “And not without reason. I’m totally impressed. I would love to come here more often.”
