Anupam Kher lives in rented home to avoid future family property disputes: 'I've heard harrowing stories of sons throwing out fathers'
Anupam Kher has been a prominent figure in Bollywood for more than forty years, yet he continues to live in a rented apartment. His choice stems from a desire to ensure that his family enjoys a life of peace and unity after him, free from disputes that could arise from inherited property.
Preventing Family Conflicts Over Property
Anupam recently appeared on The Powerful Humans podcast and shared why he chooses to live in a rented home, even though he can afford to own multiple properties. He explained that this choice stems from his wish to prevent family disputes over inherited assets after he is gone. He said, “Once a person is gone, or has passed away, there is a chance that some disputes might arise regarding the property he has left behind. There is less conflict involved with distributing money. I have seen and talked to aged people, and their stories are harrowing. Someone has been thrown out by their son; someone is being coerced to sign over their property. These kinds of things and conversations don’t happen in my house.”
Thoughts on Fatherhood and Parenting
The actor also reflected on his role as a stepfather to Sikandar, confessing that he chooses not to interfere excessively in his life. He added, “Sikandar is my stepson. Kids of today don’t ask their fathers for permission before doing anything. I don’t play the role of a father in my real life; that’s fine for the movies. I don’t go up to Sikandar and tell him how he should handle his business. Kids don’t learn in this manner, and my father never told me what to do. Parents should give their kids a certain amount of freedom so that they learn from their own mistakes.”
Marriage and Family Formation
In 1985, Kher and Kirron Kher got married. At that time, Kirron was dealing with a challenging separation from her then-husband, Gautam Berry, while Anupam was recovering from his own breakup. Anupam has mentioned that Sikander, Kirron’s son, was four years old when he joined their family.
