Director Anubhav Sinha reflected on his collaboration with Rishi Kapoor in the 2017 film Mulk, a pivotal moment in Sinha's career and a transformative phase for Kapoor. Despite suggestions to approach Amitabh Bachchan for the lead, Sinha opted for Kapoor, emphasizing the need for a character projecting vulnerability.
Anubhav Sinha shared that he penned the script for Mulk in just three days, sending the initial draft to filmmaker friends at 3 am. Despite earlier concerns about its box office prospects, the encouragement from his peers convinced him to proceed. Reflecting on an altercation with Rishi Kapoor, he mentioned that he told Rishi Kapoor that he isn't scared of him as he handled his legendary uncle Shammi Kapoor in his debut TV show Shikast. Sinha shared that Shammi Kapoor played a negative role in the show and had laid down certain conditions but soon the two of them developed a deep friendship.
Anubhav also shared that Rishi Kapoor had given him a 20% discount for Mulk as it was a different film. Mulk also featured names like Taapsee Pannu, Neena Gupta, Manoj Pahwa and Ashutosh Rana. Rishi Kapoor passed away in 2020 after a prolonged illness.
