Anees Bazmee recalls not a ‘single person laughing’ during Welcome’s test screenings; says 'was sent to hospital for stress’

Anees Bazmee who is gearing up for the release of 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3' starring Kartik Aaryan, Tripti Dimri, Madhuri Dixit and Vidya Balan, recalls how he was stressed and shattered when no one laughed over the jokes or comedy scenes of the film during the screening of his 2007 cult classic 'Welcome'. Consequently, he had to be hospitalized due to the stress.

During his conversation with Hindustan Times, Anees Bazmee shared that when he created 'Welcome', the common feedback he received was that it didn’t fit the traditional comedy mould. He explained that he stood by his vision, stating that he could not resort to typical comedic tactics, like slapstick humour or double entendres, as he viewed them as shortcuts.

Bazmee emphasized that his approach to comedy is rooted in thoughtful writing rather than relying on gimmicks, expressing confidence in the style of humour he crafted for the film.

Anees Bazmee revealed that the stress from negative reactions prior to the release of 'Welcome' led to his hospitalization. He explained that receiving unfavourable feedback from a hundred people caused him significant anxiety, as he invested himself fully in each project, treating it as a personal battle.

The filmmaker added that he didn’t have a substantial body of work to fall back on, which added to his stress, especially considering the many people involved in the film, including financiers. While in the hospital, he reviewed his script scene-by-scene over two days and ultimately concluded that the film had merit, reinforcing his conviction that it was a worthwhile project.

Meanwhile, Anees Bazmee's next, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, is slated to release in theatres on November 1. The horror comedy stars Kartik Aaryan, Vidya Balan, Madhuri Dixit, and Triptii Dimri.
